mother. abc's correspondent reports on the unfolding drama from midland city, alabama. >> reporter: after a week-long standoff a happy day in alabama where the little boy kidnapped from the school bus is safe. a new picture of 5-year-old ethan. >> i have been to the hospital. i have visited with ethan. he is doing fine. >> reporter: the suspect, 65-year-old jimmy lee dykes is dead. abc news has learned authorities were able to insert a high-tech camera into the bunker and monitor dykes' movements. when they be kale increasingly concerned he might act out they positioned the swat team near the entrance and used an explosive charge to get into the bunker and neutralize dykes. the s standoff began last tuesd when the suspect boarded a school bus and threatened the kids. dykes allegedly shot and killed the bus driver and kidnapped ethan. 5-year-old ethan believed to have autism was held captive in the underground bunker, 6 x 8 while police and swat teams above ground carefully negotiated through a ventilation pipe. dykes allowed what authorities called comfort item to be sent down the pipe, t

with us victor blackwell in midland city in alabama watching this unfold. victor, first, let me start with you. the standoff stretched for seven days and ended in just a mere matter of minutes. are we getting any more information from officials on why they decided to go in, how they decided to go in, and how they pulled this off? >> reporter: exactly. and this is a blend of both military science and social science. i will leave the military end up to chris. i'll tell you about the other element. we have reached out to the fbi contact, we have been speaking to this week, alabama state police, some sources who were close to the situation. we know this came down to the last 24 hours. and the fbi hostage rescue team, it's more than just the guys who go in to pull the child out. there are behavioral scientists, tactical technicians, the fbi swat, the negotiators, they are all here at the same time. we know in the last 24 hours, the communications with jimmy lee dykes became agitated. he continued to talk, but as it went on and on, he became less willing to negotiate, we heard from alabama

a comment from the mayor of midland city, virgil skipper. so i spoke with him this morning about if he, indeed, heard the boy crying himself. so i said, have you been to the bunker? she said no, i haven't been past the barrier. did you speak with someone who heard the boy crying i asked him. he said no one told me that specifically. so that was speculation about this boy crying in a bunker fer his parents. he said you know he's crying. he's a 6-year-old boy. well, we know that he's 5, and that again is just an assumption that the boy is crying. we'll get more information from the authorities when this news conference starts in a few moments. miguel? >> such a crazy way this unfolded with the bus driver, incredibly brave bus driver, keeping this gunman from getting on the bus, letting 20-some kids out the back, this other young man taken by him. do we have any sense of a possible motive? >> reporter: this all started on tuesday when a school bus stopped in front of a road that leads up to the property owned by jimmy lee dykes. what we know from someone who lives in this community, has b

. jenna: elizabeth prann is live in midland city, alabama, where she is covering the story since it first broke a week ago. elizabeth, take us if you would to the scene of the crime. what is happening there now? >> well, we can see officials are still combing through the scene behind us. by all accounts this was a very many could plex and a very sensitive situation. in fact bomb technicians were on site earlier this morning. we learned from the fbi. they are confirming there was a camera inside the bunker. they were speaking with jimmy lee dykes through a pipe as well as the cell phone. they witnessed the suspect's deterioration and they acted as he continued to get agitated. officials think that dykes was killed by law enforcement. fbi officials contacted us directly. they say they're processing the scene. they will send a review board that will later release the details about the shooting death of dykes. we've heard multiple questions about the drone surveillance. fbi said that military was not involved. the drone circling overhead was in fact from law enforcement. jenna. jenna: tomorro
